Jaipur

The Pink City — the busiest, and the best served, corner of Rajasthan.

India's first planned city, laid out in 1727 on a nine-block grid. Amber Fort, the palace complex and Jantar Mantar are all UNESCO-listed, and the bazaars are the reason most groups want an extra evening here.

Best photographed from the cafe across the road at sunrise.

    9:00–17:00

Still a royal residence in part; the textile gallery is excellent.

    9:30–17:00

  4. 04

    Jantar Mantar

Eighteenth-century observatory with the world's largest stone sundial.

    9:00–17:00

    Jewellery, mojaris and block print.
