Worth stopping for

Osian

Before you set off

Leave Jodhpur by 7:00 to reach Jaisalmer before the midday heat and still catch Bada Bagh at sunset.
If you want the cranes at Khichan, you need to be on the road by 5:30 — they disperse by mid-morning.
Fuel and clean washrooms thin out after Phalodi. Stop there even if you do not think you need to.
Mobile coverage is patchy for roughly 40 km either side of Phalodi.

How long does the Jodhpur to Jaisalmer drive take?

Around five hours of driving for the 285 km, on a good single-carriageway highway. Allow six to six and a half hours door to door with a tea stop and a short halt at Osian.

Which vehicle is best for Jodhpur to Jaisalmer?

For four to six people, an Innova Crysta. For a family group of eight to sixteen, a 17-seater tempo traveller is the most common booking. Larger groups take a 35 or 45-seater AC coach comfortably — the highway handles full-size buses without difficulty.

Can we visit Sam Sand Dunes the same day?

Yes, and most groups do. Sam is a further 42 km west of Jaisalmer, about an hour. Arriving in Jaisalmer by lunchtime leaves plenty of margin for a sunset camel safari and a night at a desert camp.

Is the road safe at night?

It is a good road, but we recommend daylight travel. Stray cattle and unlit vehicles are a genuine hazard on this stretch after dark, and you would miss the landscape, which is most of the point.
